Winnie the Therapy Dog

Winnie, our therapy dog, is a much-loved member of the Hope School and College community. She plays an important role in supporting the wellbeing, learning and personal development of our pupils. Winnie provides a calm, friendly and non-judgemental presence, helping pupils to feel safe, relaxed and ready to engage in school life.

Some of our pupils experience anxiety, communication difficulties, sensory processing differences or challenges with emotional regulation. Spending time with Winnie can help reduce stress and create a sense of calm, enabling pupils to feel more settled and confident throughout the school day. Her gentle nature helps pupils to regulate their emotions and supports positive behaviour and engagement.

Winnie also encourages the development of communication and social skills. Pupils often find it easier to interact with Winnie, using her as a focus for conversation, turn-taking and relationship building. For some pupils, Winnie provides motivation to communicate, whether through speech, signs, symbols or other forms of communication.

Winnie supports pupils’ emotional wellbeing by offering comfort and companionship. Her presence can help pupils manage transitions, build resilience and develop self-confidence. Many pupils take great pride in caring for and interacting with Winnie, which promotes responsibility, empathy and independence.

For pupils with sensory needs, Winnie provides valuable sensory experiences through touch and interaction. Stroking her fur and spending quiet time with her can be calming and therapeutic, helping pupils to regulate their sensory input and emotional responses.

At Hope School and College, Winnie enhances our nurturing and inclusive environment. She supports our commitment to meeting the diverse needs of our pupils and contributes to a positive school culture where every child and young person feels valued, supported and able to achieve their full potential.
