The Six Principles of Nurture

Hope School and College is proud to have achieved the National Nurturing Schools Award, recognising our commitment to creating a nurturing, inclusive and supportive environment where every child and young person can thrive. Achieving this award reflects the dedication of our staff, families and wider school community in embedding the Principles of Nurture throughout all aspects of school life.

The six principles are:

  • Learning is understood developmentally
  • The classroom offers a safe base
  • Nurture is important for the development of wellbeing
  • Language is a vital means of communication
  • All behaviour is communication
  • Transitions are important in children’s lives

Learning is understood developmentally

At Hope School and College, nurture is not an intervention or a programme; it is at the heart of everything we do. We recognise that children and young people learn and develop at different rates and that learning is most effective when it is tailored to an individual’s developmental stage. Our curriculum, teaching approaches and support strategies are carefully designed to meet the diverse needs of our learners, ensuring that every pupil can experience success and make meaningful progress.

The classroom offers a safe base

We believe that every classroom should provide a safe base where children and young people feel secure, valued and ready to learn. Our learning environments are welcoming, predictable and structured, helping pupils to develop confidence, resilience and independence. Across the school, calm spaces and nurturing environments support emotional regulation and wellbeing.

Nurture is important for the development of wellbeing

Positive relationships are central to our approach. We understand that nurture is fundamental to the development of wellbeing, and we prioritise warm, trusting and respectful relationships between staff, pupils and families. Through these relationships, children and young people develop a sense of belonging, self-worth and emotional security.

Language is a vital means of communication

Communication is a key focus throughout the school. We recognise that language is a vital means of communication and work hard to develop pupils’ communication skills, emotional literacy and self-expression. Staff support children and young people to understand and communicate their feelings, needs and experiences using a range of personalised approaches.

All behaviour is communication

At Hope School and College, we recognise that all behaviour is communication. Rather than focusing solely on behaviour itself, we seek to understand the underlying emotions, needs or experiences that may be influencing a child’s actions. This approach enables us to respond with empathy, consistency and appropriate support, helping children and young people develop self-regulation and positive coping strategies.

Transitions are important in children’s lives

We also understand that transitions are significant in children and young people’s lives. Whether moving between activities, classes, key stages or preparing for adulthood, we carefully plan and support transitions to reduce anxiety and build confidence. Individualised transition programmes help ensure that pupils feel safe, prepared and successful as they move through their educational journey.

Boxall Profile

To further strengthen our nurturing approach, we utilise assessment and intervention tools such as the Boxall Profile to identify social, emotional and developmental needs and provide targeted support. Nurturing spaces can be found throughout the school, offering safe environments where pupils can regulate emotions, reflect and re-engage with learning. Most importantly, our nurturing ethos is embedded in daily practice, shaping the way we teach, communicate and build relationships.

National Nurturing Schools Award

The National Nurturing Schools Award recognises Hope School and College’s commitment to ensuring that every child and young person feels safe, valued, understood and supported. Through our whole-school nurturing approach, we continue to create an environment where pupils can flourish academically, socially and emotionally, preparing them for happy, successful futures.
